OPING THE AUTO CORRECTION feature would help convey his message to Josie, Alex had texted her, letting her know he'd be walking her to school. With only five hours of rest, and some making up to do, an uphill climb loomed.

“Let’s see, granola bar. Check. O.J. Check.” Alex patted his little brother and sister on their heads and dashed out the door. “Okay, guys, gotta go!”

The door clipped his backpack as it shut.

School, Josie, chores, and now less sleep. My plate is spilling over. As gravel danced under his feet, Alex contemplated his life’s demands.

Despite the pressure, he thought about his future career and the places throughout the world where modern design influenced the local theme. When I get a job after college, I’m going to make my mark on the world with my buildings.

A few steps from Josie’s house, a familiar tug—an urge to look north—bit him. But he fought it.

There was only one mission right now: to reassure Josie and get to school. Alex had finally reached her house. His finger met the doorbell. The mood was now up to Josie.

“Well, look who came up for air,” Josie said through puckered lips.

Alex braced for the next hit. “I’m sorry about this weekend. I was so tired.”

“Oh, really... from what?”

“Well, you know. Hanging with the guys, homework, chores... stuff.”

“A text only takes two seconds, Alex.” Josie demonstrated her point on her cell phone.

Alex pleaded with puppy dog eyes. “I know. It won’t happen again. I promise.”

Josie had two choices: blast Alex or let it go. Luckily for him, she held on to the former to use at a later date in case his promise turned out to be empty.

“Alright then, let’s go,” she said.

Alex grabbed her hand, then glanced toward the north briefly as they made their way to Danville Heights High School.

Della finger tested oven-fresh chocolate chip cookies. “What time are the guys coming by?”

Kinsu had set the stage for the great video game competition. “4:30, Mom.”

There would be a fight, or a comedy show, depending on how seriously the warriors got into the game. A chiming doorbell kicked the afternoon into high gear.

“Hey, guys.” Kinsu high-fived his four friends, and Mason, who had tagged along with Jordan.

Mason was first in line to get his dessert before dinner. “I love chocolate chip cookies, Miss Della.” He stuffed the warm goodness into his mouth.

Della’s raised eyebrows humored Mason. “Why, I had no idea.” She arranged the last of the cookies on the plate. “Oh, let me see. You love pizza, too, right?”

Mason’s eyes grew big. “Pepperoni?”

“Right there in the oven.” Della gathered plates and napkins for the impending chow down. “By the way, if you get bored with all this action, you can help me with my plants in the front yard.”

“Okay, thanks, Miss Della,” Mason said.

With a couple of hours of sunlight remaining, Della went outside to focus on her window garden.

Rhee ripped through the video game with ease. “Hey, watch out!”

“Get back on your side!” Jordan yelled as they battled it out.
